We’re excited to share a new milestone in our product development: our Gravity Line transformers are now available in a version with test voltage up to 36 kV. The prototype has successfully passed rigorous type and routine tests, including environmental testing, and meets all requirements for mechanical strength, thermal stability, and dielectric integrity.
This voltage extension is the result of focused development to offer our long-term customers – typically operating 10 kV and 20 kV networks – a proven and reliable solution also for 30 kV applications. With this step, we’re expanding the Gravity Line portfolio to support a broader range of distribution projects without compromising on quality or availability.
Why 36 kV? Responding to customer needs
This portfolio expansion was a direct response to specific customer requirements, particularly from mountainous regions of Austria, where the power grid is sparse and higher voltage is essential for efficient energy transmission. However, it also has strong potential for use in the Czech Republic, Germany, and Spain – in industry, renewable energy, and urban infrastructure. Higher voltage allows energy to be transmitted over longer distances with fewer losses, which is key for both new projects and modernization efforts.
Development and testing: safety and resilience first
To develop a transformer for 36 kV, it was necessary to redefine certain design parameters – especially insulation distances and HV coil configurations. The result is a double-cylinder design that ensures safe operation at high voltage levels. The new models have successfully passed type tests including thermal run, sound level test, lightning impulse (170 kV), and routine tests.
We did not repeat the C3 climatic test or the F1 fire resistance test on this prototype, as the construction and materials used are identical to our 24 kV series, which has already passed these tests successfully. However, we did re-conduct the critical E3 environmental test specifically on the 36 kV prototype to verify its durability under extreme conditions. The result confirmed excellent resilience – the transformer passed without any issues.
